Another roadtrip

Our weekend trips away from home displace activities like my writing here. Last weekend, we stayed near Sunderland, renting a garden flat looking out toward Roker Beach. The weather on our full day there was unremittingly dreich. We had some luck getting a good parking spot on our last morning there: before we departed, we walked out on to Roker Pier from where we could stand at the lighthouse and watch dolphins in the North Sea.

Our route took us near the Solway Aviation Museum which made an excellent pausing point, R.'s sons got a tour of an Vulcan. In subsequent reading I now learn that the Tornado can carry nuclear weapons and that the UK's buying F-35A's for carrying them too. I had not realized that there was interest in delivery other than from submarines.

British election

The election happened. Feeling rushed, I took less care than usual in researching my options but there were readily available links online to manifestos and suchlike. As a sufficient discriminator, I focused on parties' positions on the subset of issues where I care more and where I expected more divergence.

Britain is good at offering abundantly many polling stations open for long hours, I have never seen much of a queue. It was R.'s and their eldest first time voting here so I tried to be informative but not overly so. I was surprised how long our regional ballot paper was in person, my not having thought through how it had to fit well over a dozen parties plus a couple of independents. It all seemed to go easily and smoothly even though our polling station serves three … districts? each of which needs two ballot boxes for each of that district's kinds of ballot. It is nice to be in a country that can count elections in hours rather than days.

In every election, my tendency is to weigh my options; over the years, I have voted for a good range of parties. The main exception might be that I don't believe I've ever voted Republican in the US. Twenty years ago I might have at least given them thought but, especially in this modern era, Republicans will have to find some principles, honesty and compassion before I can ever even consider them again. In recent years, the Conservatives in Britain have also moved enough rightward to be beyond the pale for me. I don't think I've moved much leftward in my old age, I think the parties moved under me: Labour remains much more Blair's than Kinnock's, and Badenoch's running scared of Reform. (Some Reform members think the National Socialists made some good points.) I'm slightly awkward because I'm more progressive socially than along other policy axes so it's always a tradeoff: in this case, drawing a few almost-red lines on issues narrowed the options nicely.

The results leave me quite comfortable with remaining in Scotland: Reform did the worst up here. Locally, and in general, the SNP did well. I am not their biggest fan but there are certainly worse and, not winning a majority in Parliament, perhaps they can focus more on governing than referenda. The SNP has this habit of campaigning on many issues then deeming every vote to be a mandate for Scottish independence.

Age: 37

I mostly post about: Writing, exercising, shows I'm watching, or any old thing that's on my mind.

My hobbies are: Fanfiction (reading and writing), sports (watching), anime/manga, older video games, long walks, playing with animals. I dabble in a lot of little things, but mostly, I'm a writer.

My fandoms are: WWE (specifically the little corner of tumblr that still likes The Shield. I'll never let Roman live Rolleigns or Ambreigns down) Final Fantasy IX, Persona 5, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Survivor, and many others.

I'm looking to meet people who: I want a variety of people to talk to, but I'm not looking for anyone to sell me new interests or criticize my current ones. I have my own reasons for what interests me, and it doesn't matter if those reasons are superficial. I want people with a "Live and Let Live" mentality when it comes to fandom, but also, who feels comfortable leaving the occasional comment.

My posting schedule tends to be: Sporadic, but daily posting is my goal.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: MAGA, performative activism, disagreeable/argumentative people who can't help themselves, plus anyone who makes or agrees with statements calling for the general mass harm of US American citizens (or anyone around the world, yes, but listen.) Personally, I fucking hate MAGA, never voted for the clown king regardless of what anyone else did, but I am so sick of random self-righteous assholes saying cruel shit about my country's working people. Any of my country's working people, including ones scammed into morally reprehensible work. We should be changing their minds, not calling for their harm. Yes, that work is never done and we're all tired, but consider this: there are billionaires and politicians causing real harm in real time while some people are seriously still out here policing fandoms and cancelling low hanging fruit like they're accomplishing anything. That's a fucking joke if you ask me. And you know what? You do you, but please, skip friending me if this is you.

Before adding me, you should know: I am a passionate, friendly person. I want to talk to people in a light and fun way, hang out, do fandom as chill as I can. This is stress relief from work. I don't want to treat it like an obligation or something I have to think too hard about. Naturally, there's nothing I wouldn't ask of people that I'm not willing to give in return. :)

Was thinking yesterday about one of the two main Rumpole stories I can recall reading, ‘Rumpole and the Genuine Article,’ and trying to remember if I’d also seen a tv adaptation. I’m still not sure if I watched it, but it turns out one exists, and furthermore the accused forger was played by Emlyn Williams, so now I’ve got to watch it when I get a moment (it’s on Dailymotion https://dai.ly/x5v2ntf).

Meanwhile, Tom Scott has posted his best new episode since the one last month about the bell foundry: ‘Hello From Inside a Tiny Boat.’
https://youtu.be/cMYYcddinkE?si=_EUtwxOGlSK0ZQWz I love how delighted this man gets whenever he’s experiencing some strange mode of transportation; or even when he’s shut in a miniature aircraft-carrier, horizontal and barely able to see where he’s going, yelling “Oh blimey there's a pedalo coming in at speed"or yelping because there’s a large moth inside the tiny Ark Royal and it just landed on his face.

We took a trip to Perth to visit an old friend, Lesley, who was at university at St Andrews with the Scot and was also my maid of honour when we got wed.

The museum  is where the stone of destiny is now kept and also has some very fine Pictish symbol stones:

Amazingly, found the morris dancers before they started. One of these years I’ll wise up and take the subway instead of hiking up from the south end of the park. Spent several minutes homing in on what I thought was faint music in the distance and turned out to be the Grenadier Restaurant’s generator.

Above-average number of people in cloaks here. Props to the person in the Metallica Pushead Sun hoodie.

We’ve been informed it’s five minutes to sunrise. Someone is tootling a while concerto in their car horn.

They’ve blocked off the road this year so we won’t have to yell CAR like it’s a street-hockey game.

Man in Charge: *bellows something*
Man with glasses drawn on his face, carrying a small broom: “He’s saying the next dance is called ‘The Bells of York.’”

man accompanying morris dancers

The man with glasses drawn on his face has offered somebody a dry leaf. Am beginning to suspect him of being one of the Fair Folk.

"This is going to go on for a bit, so if you want to step away and go for a coffee, or a meal, or to put a child through university, that’s all right. It’ll all look just the same when you come back.”
